These works are based on a book I illustrated in 2008 called Seven Miles to Freedom, written by Janet Halfmann and based on the true story of Robert Smalls. This ex-slave turned soldier helps his family and friends escape the South through the Charleston Harbor on his steamboat during the Civil War.
My influences range from Degas to those from the golden era of illustrators, and from Rockwell to fine artists such as Lawrence, Bearden, Rauschenberg, Pollock and Jaspers Johns.
 Duane Smith is an illustrator, designer and educator. In addition to Seven Miles to Freedom, he has illustrated the children's books Mama's Window by Lynn Rubright and Night Journey to Vicksburg by Susan Rowan Masters. He has also created editorial illustrations, as well as conceptual illustrations, storyboards, film posters and murals for film development projects. He has been an art instructor for a number of after-school programs in New York City. He earned a M.A. in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology and a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute.
